D. J. “DICK” WESTHOFF

D. J. “Dick” Westhoff, 90, or rural LeMars, died Monday, Sept. 22, 1997, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.

D. J. “Dick” Westhoff was born Nov. 6, 1906, on the family farm in Grant township, the son of Dietrich and Gretje (Ludwigs) Westhoff. He was baptized on Dec. 2, 1906, and confirmed March 20, 1921, in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school in Grant township. On Feb. 7, 1935, he married Irene Frerichs. She died Nov. 19, 1936.

He later was united in marriage to Amanda Jelken at her parents home on March 23, 1941. He continued to farm the family farm that has been in the Westhoff family since 1880.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in LeMars.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda of LeMars; a son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Rachel Westhoff, of LeMars; three grandchildren, Terri Benson and her husband, Paul, of Shakopee, Minn., Lora Berner and her husband, Douglas, of Norwalk, and Keith Westhoff and his wife, Donna, of Struble; and five great-grandchildren, Julie and Jessica Benson, Joel Berner, and Brittany and Brady Westhoff.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doretta Kruse and Emma Popken.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in LeMars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.
