A. G. Vander Meer, 83, LeMars, retired longtime bakery operator, died Thursday (July 12, 1973) at Floyd Valley Hospital after a short illness.

Mr. and Mrs. Vander Meer have made their home at the hospital the last three years.

Mr. Vander Meer had served on the board of directors of LeMars Federal Savings and Loan since Jan. 1, 1953, and at present was chairman. He also was a member of the LeMars city council having been appointed Nov. 14, 1950, to fill the unexpired term of Dale Becker. He served until Dec. 31, 1955.

He was a charter member of the Calvin Reformed church.

Mr. Vander Meer learned the bakery trade in Holland and came to the United States settling in the Rock Valley area in 1907. He operated a bakery there for 36 years before moving to LeMars in 1944. While here he worked with his son, Peter, in the Vander Meer bakery.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Calvin Christian Reformed church, LeMars, with Rev. Joel Boot officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, LeMars, under the direction of the Mauer funeral home.

Arie Gerrit Vander Meer was born Oct. 16, 1889, at Rotterdam, Holland, the son of the late Peter and Anna (Kekker) Vander Meer.

He was married Dec. 9, 1909, near Hawarden to Eva VanBuyn.

Survivors are his wife, Eva, of LeMars; a son, Peter, of LeMars; a sister, Marie Van Zanten in Holland, and two brothers, Joe in Holland and Peter at Luzern, Switzerland, eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
