ESTHER M. THOMPSON

Esther M. Thompson, 95, LeMars, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997, at the Merrill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Malone officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars. There will be a prayer service Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Kommes, Kevin Kommes, Robert Waltz, Michael Thompson, Patrick Thompson, Mark Waltz, Scott Waltz, Steven Shekels and Shawn Shekels.

Esther Mary Davis was born May 15, 1901, to George and Emma (Carpenter) Davis at Inman, Neb. She was raised and educated at Inman. Following high school, Esther received her teaching certificate from Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. She taught country school in Nebraska for several years.

Esther was united in marriage to Earl Thompson at Cushing, Iowa, on Dec. 2, 1933. The couple had lived in several towns in Iowa before moving to Hinton and in 1962 to Merrill.

Esther was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Merrill where she had been active with the Ladies Aid for many years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and working crossword puzzles. Esther had also been active in Tuesday Club and was a 4-H leader for several years.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Erlene and Kenneth Kommes of Fort Dodge, Kay and Edward Waltz of Sioux City, Erma and Lawrence Hecht of Merrill, Evalee and Jerry Waltz of Winterset; a son and daughter-in-law, Eldon and Heidi Thompson of Sergeant Bluff; two brothers, Kenneth and Elsie Davis of Bountiful, Utah, and John Davis of Mesa, Ariz.; 23 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Rhita Thompson, of Charleston, S.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl, in January of 1991; a daughter, Estella Shekels, in August of 1970; a son, Errol, in February of 1992; three sisters; six brothers; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
