CLAIRE E. STEELE

Claire E. Steele, 69, LeMars native and lifelong resident, died Saturday (March 9, 1991) at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center.

He had served as Plymouth County auditor from 1961 to 1987.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Presbyterian United Church of Christ of LeMars, with Rev. Robert Grupp and Rev. Kenneth Royar officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday with the family present from 7-8 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mr. Steele was born Jan. 29, 1922, in LeMars, the son of Charles C. and Floy Seeley Steele. He graduated from Central High School and attended Western Union College in LeMars.

Jane Peters and Mr. Steele were married Sept. 6, 1944, in LeMars. A lifelong resident of the LeMars area, Mr. Steele farmed from 1945 to 1960, and served for 26 years as Plymouth County Auditor, beginning in 1961, retiring in 1987.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of Presbyterian United Church of Christ in LeMars, where he served as an elder. He was a member of the Lions Club and Wasmer Post 241, American Legion.

Survivors are his wife, Jane; a son, Tom Steele and his wife, Pam, of Belle Fourche, S.D.; a daughter, Margaret Kennedy and her husband, Jim, of Sumner, Iowa; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Gerry Steele of Apple Valley, Minn., and Cathy Steele of LeMars; a brother, Leon Steele, of Fullerton, Ill.; and a sister, Jane Truesdell and her husband, Myrle, of LeMars.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Bruce, who died in 1974.
