A 17-year-old LeMars boy was found dead Monday, July the Fourth, after an apparent suicide, according to LeMars Police Chief Wilbur Peterson.
Dr. Jerry L. VanEs, acting medical examiner, ruled Ronald Schell died of strangulation. VanEs said Schell died by self-inflicted hanging and had been dead about five or six hours before the body was found at 10 a.m.
He was the son of Donna and Bernie Gundel, 627 1st Ave. SW.
LeMars policeman, Joe Kraayenbrink reported Schell was found in his bedroom closet. He had gone to bed shortly after midnight Monday.
Schell had dropped out of school this spring, according to officials at LeMars Community High School. He would have been a senior this fall.
Reymard Satory, LeMars Community High School counselor, said Schell had academic and athletic ability, but was not socially inclined.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's American Lutheran Church, LeMars. Burial will be under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home, LeMars.
Rev. Tom Lee will officiate and burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, LeMars.
Ron was born Nov. 16, 1965, in LeMars to Robert and Donna Bishop Schell. He had planned to enter military service in September. He was a member of St. John's American Lutheran Church, in LeMars.
Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Donna Gundel, and stepfather, Bernie Gundel, both of LeMars; a sister, Teresa Flewelling, Sioux City, and a nephew Scott Flewelling, Sioux City; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard (Minnie) Knudsen, Merrill and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon (Della) Curry, Gig Harbor, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Schell, and three grandfather, Edward Schell, Ross Port and Lee Bishop.
