David D. Sams, 23, of West LeMars died about 10:20 p.m. Monday of self-inflicted gunshot wounds.Plymouth County Sheriff Dave Stock said he was called at 10:34 p.m. to the home of young Sams’ father, Everett Sams.
West LeMars is an unincorporated cluster of several houses and a feed mill a mile and a half west of LeMars on Highway 3.
Dr. Daryl Doorenbos, Plymouth County Medical Examiner, ruled the death a suicide. This was the seventh suicide in Plymouth County this year. According to records at the Plymouth County Clerk of Courts office, there have been six “undetermined” deaths without notes and one suicide with a note. The deaths have occurred one each month with the exception of May.
Sams had lived since May with his father at West LeMars. He was born May 26, 1960, in LeMars to Everett and Rosemary Van Voorst Sams. He attended grade schools here and left to live in Omaha with his mother.
Survivors are his mother, Rosemary, Omaha; his father, Everett Sams, LeMars; a brother, Darrell, Omaha; three sisters, Mrs. Ronald (Clara) Hunter, LeMars; Mrs. Robert (Beverly) Neary, Omaha; and Mrs. David (Marsha) Brady, Omaha; a half-brother, Everett J. Sams, Jr., LeMars, and two half-sisters, Sara Sams, LeMars, and Kim Vander Beeck, Omaha.

Funeral services for David D. Sams, 23, LeMars, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars. Rev. Kenneth Lundeen will officiate and burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, LeMars.
He died Aug. 1, 1983, at the home of his father, Everett Sams, at West LeMars. His death by gunshot wounds was ruled as a suicide by Dr. Daryl Doorenbos, Plymouth County medical examiner.
Survivors are his father, Everett Sams, LeMars; his mother, Rosemary Van Voorst Sams, Omaha; a daughter, Dana, Omaha; his step-mother Juanita Sams, LeMars; a brother, Darrell Sams, Omaha; sister, Mrs. Ronald (Clara) Hunter, LeMars; Mrs. Robert (Beverly) Neary, and Mrs. David (Marcia) Bradley, both of Omaha; a half-brother, Everett J. Sams Jr., LeMars; and two half-sisters, Sara Sams, LeMars and Kim VanderBeeck, Omaha.
