LE MARS, Iowa -- Irma Strathman, 89, of Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jon Meredith officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

Irma Gladys Howder was born March 6, 1913, in Ekalaka, Mont., the daughter of William Reason and Orpha Ella (Shirk) Howder. She was raised and educated in Draper, S.D.

On Oct. 24, 1933, Irma and Edward Strathman were united in marriage in Chamberlain, S.D. The couple made their home in various locations, where she held bookkeeping and service positions. More recently Irma and Ed ran the Corner Cafe in Brunsville, Iowa, from 1964 to 1973. Her friendliness and hospitality greeted many customers. Upon selling the Corner Cafe, they managed the Eastridge Terrace Apartments in Le Mars. They retired to Brunsville in 1982. Ed passed away on July 10, 1955. Irma moved into the Happy Siesta Nursing Home that same year.

Irma's life was centered on her family. The loved and example she gave to her children will be cherished forever. Her caring and friendly nature touched many lives.

Irma will be lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses, Carol and Dick Gengler of Remsen, Connie and Richard Frankhauser of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Curt and Priscilla of Le Mars and Julie Strathman-Thatcher and Charles Thatcher of Vermillion, S.D.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Verda Hurst of Pierre, S.D., and Hazel Beauchamp of Sacramento, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Jim Frankhauser; four brothers and two sisters.
