Laura (Dollie) Stokes, 85, lifelong Plymouth County resident, died Friday, Oct. 6, 1989, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Union Township Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Howard Marty officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens in LeMars. Visitation began at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mrs. Stokes was born Sept. 3, 1903, in Plymouth County, the daughter of John W. and Mary (Billings) Bixby. She attended Normal School at Cedar Falls, and taught school in Plymouth County for five years. She married Gordon Stokes Feb. 12, 1930, at Wentworth, S.D.

During the term of her husband’s office as an Iowa legislator, she served as a postal clerk for the Legislature. He died May 28, 1978.

She was a member of the Union Township Presbyterian Church, and the Order of Eastern Star. She was active in 4-H in Plymouth County.

Survivors are a sister, Mrs. Lennice Jolley of Topeka, Kan., and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and a sister.
