FRED H. POPKEN
Fred H. Popken, 87, rural Ireton, a lifelong Plymouth County resident, died Monday (Dec. 4, 1989) at Floyd Valley Hospital.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township, rural Akron. Rev. Stephany A. Sanborn will officiate and burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, LeMars, under the direction of the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m.
He was born Oct. 6, 1902, in Plymouth County to Fred and Reaka Janssen Popken. He married Josephine Grosenheider Dec. 16, 1927, in the home of her parents, Preston Township. The couple farmed in the Akron area until 1964 when they retired. They moved to rural Ireton where they lived the last 18 years.
Mr. Popken entered the Akron Care Center in December 1988 and later lived at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.
He was a lifetime member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Akron.
Survivors are his wife, Josephine, Ireton; a son, Ronald and his wife, Linda, Akron; two grandsons, Todd and his wife Tammy of Ireton and Matthew of Iowa City; a great grandson, Alex, the son of Todd and Tammy of Ireton; a brother, William Popken of LeMars; and a sister, Katherine Bloomquist of Maganet, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Dick, Otto, John, George, and Elmer; and five sisters, Theresa, Lizzie, Freda, Tillia and Marie.
