MELVIN “MEL” PITTS

Melvin “Mel” C. Pitts, 83, of LeMars, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at the home of his daughter in LeMars.

Melvin Clarence Pitts was born Sept. 21, 1915, in Iona, Minn., the son of John and Maude (Donovan) Pitts. As a young boy, Mel moved with his family to LeMars and attended Catholic school in LeMars. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945. Following his honorable discharge from the service, Mel returned to LeMars.

He was united in marriage to Leona Willer in 1946 at Iona, Minn. They were the parents of two children, Judy and Thomas. Mel had worked for South Side Auto Salvage in LeMars for over 20 years. He enjoyed collecting and selling antiques. He was a member of the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of LeMars.

Survivors include his daughter, Judy Lang and her special friend, Mark Schrick of LeMars; a sister, Louise Miller, of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Curt Lang and his wife, Nancy of LeMars, Cheri Schumacher and her husband, Mark, of South Sioux City, Neb., Misty Brand, Rusty Burnett, Kyle Pitts and Clark Pitts, all of LeMars; four great-grandchildren, Cara, Melissa and Mackenzie Lang, and Laura Burnett; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Leona Pitts, a son Thomas; two brothers, John and Roy Pitts; and two sisters, Evelyn Ebrecht and Bernice Paul.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars with the Rev. Richard Ries of St. James Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural LeMars, with graveside military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
