MARTHA L. PHILIPS

Martha L. Philips, 96, of LeMars, died early Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.

The former Martha Gabel was born Jan. 21, 1902, in Preston Township, in rural Plymouth County, the daughter of Milton and Lena (Herbst) Gabel. She moved to Johnson Township in rural Plymouth County where she attended rural school and graduated from LeMars Central High School in 1920. Martha taught school in rural Plymouth County. On Jan. 23, 1924, she married Elmer Philips at Adaville United Methodist Church. The couple farmed in Preston Township for many years until 1967 when they retired to LeMars. Mr. Philips died June 10, 1997.

Martha was a member of Adaville United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday School, was active in Women’s group and was active in church organizations. During her spare time she enjoyed gardening and hand work. She was also a member of the Roving Gardeners Club. After moving to LeMars, Martha became a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. In July of 1993, she became a resident at the Plymouth Manor Care Center.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Betty Philips of Augusta, Wis.; two daughters and son-in-law, Lennace Mitchell of Lake Park, and Cleone and Merlin Brown of LeMars; three sisters, Mildred Stoel of Akron, Leone Knowles of Council Bluffs, and Evelyn Gabel of Santa Rosa, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Mabel Herman, Lillian Gabel, Edith Burkett and Alice Willer; and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary United Methodist Church in LeMars with the Rev. Josue L. “Joe” Florendo officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. (Monday) with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Pallbearers will be Jim Philips, Terry Mitchell, Steve Brown, Todd Philips, Scott Mitchell, and Rick Echter. Honorary pallbearers will be Pam Mitchell, Krista Brown, Sharon Zimmerman, Barb Echter, Lisa Brown and Lance Brown.
