ELMER L. PHILIPS
Elmer L. Philips, 98, of LeMars, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.
Elmer Louis Philips was born March 31, 1899, on the family farm in Hungerford township, rural Plymouth county, the son of Samuel D. and Catherine (Weinrich) Philips. He received his education in rural schools in Plymouth County. On Jan. 23, 1924, he married Martha Gabel in Adaville. The couple farmed in Preston Township until their retirement when they moved to LeMars in 1967.
During his retirement Mr. Philips remained active as an insurance adjuster for the Plymouth Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. He had served as the Preston Township assessor for many years. He had served on the board of directors for the Plymouth County Co-Op and the Plymouth Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. for many years. He had also been active with the Plymouth County Farm Bureau.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Calvary United Methodist Church in LeMars, the Rev. Dave Higdon and the Rev. Fred Malone officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today (Thursday) with the family present to greet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.
Pallbearers will be Jim Philips, Todd Philips, Scott Mitchell, Rick Echter, Steve Brown and Lance Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be Ubbe Jurrens, Verl Kehrberg, John Trobaugh, Richard Albert, Eldon Gabel and Lorvan Hawkins.
Mr. Philips was a longtime member of the Adaville United Methodist Church and later a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in LeMars.
He had been a resident of the Plymouth Manor Care Center for the past three years.
Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Betty Philips of Augusta, Wis.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lennance and Harlan Mitchell of Lake Park, and Cleone and Merlin Brown of LeMars; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a brother William Philips of Akron; a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Ralph Gabel of LeMars; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arthur and Chester Philips; two sisters, Bessie Sargent and Esther Brown; and two grandsons.
