DONALD M. PETERS

Donald M. Peters, 69, of LeMars, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at Marian Health Center in Sioux City.

Mr. Peters was born May 17, 1929, on the family farm near Bloomfield, Neb., to A. T. and Beth (Hoyt) Peters. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. The Peters family moved to LeMars when Don was in the sixth grade. He graduated from LeMars Central High School in 1947.

He was a partner with his father in Peters Farm Equipment in the late 1940’s. He married Ruth Stahmer on June 23, 1950, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. The couple lived in LeMars, and he worked for the LeMars Hatchery. In 1952, Don and Ruth purchased a farm near Seney where he had farmed until his retirement in 1992. He had also worked for the Western Area Power Association (WAPA) and Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative (NIPCO) for over 30 years.

He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, a member of the L and O Club and Plymouth County Pork Producers. Mr. Peters was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening. Don and Ruth enjoyed the opportunity to have been able to travel to every state in the continental United States. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include: his wife, Ruth, of LeMars; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dwight Harrison of Rochester, Minn.; two sons, Mark Peters of LeMars and Jim and his wife, Kay Peters, of LeMars; six grandchildren, Tricia Harrison, Angela Harrison, Dustin Harrison, Becky Peters, Jill Peters, and Laura Peters; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and William Trescott of Hinsdale, Ill.; his mother-in-law, Celeste Stahmer of LeMars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jane Steele.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at St. John's Lutheran Church, ELCA, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home, with the family present after 7 p.m. to greet friends. Memorials have been established to Hospice of Siouxland and St. John's Lutheran Church, ELCA.

Pallbearers will be Scott Albert, ElRoy De Boer, Roland Detloff, Dean Easton, Alan Stahmer, and Tom Steele.
