Henry Pageler, 85, died at the scene of a grass fire on his farm southwest of Merrill Tuesday afternoon.
Plymouth County coroner Dr. Daryl Doorenbos, who pronounced Pageler dead, said the farmer probably died of a heart attack.
Pageler was found by a neighbor who reported the field fire. His body was found near the smoldering field.
Merrill fireman Don Grant said 30 to 35 acres of corn field fence rows and grass burned in the blaze. Four Merrill firemen fought the blaze for an hour with a tanker and pumper.
Grant said the cause of the fire was unknown.
Pageler had lived on the Stanton township farm since 1951. He farmed in the Wessington Springs area from 1920 through 1933.
He moved to LeMars and then to his present farm in 1961.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. John's American Lutheran Church in LeMars. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens under the direction of the Mauer funeral home in LeMars. Rev. David Kramer will officiate.
A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and his parents.
Henry W. Pageler was born Jan. 29, 1896, in Plymouth county to John and Johanna Johnson Pageler. He was a member of St. John's American Lutheran Church.
Mr. Pageler was a veteran of World War I and a member of Wasmer post 241, LeMars.
His marriage to Lillian Thormahlen took place June 6, 1921, at Sioux Falls.
Survivors are his wife, Lillian; a son, LaVern R. of rural LeMars; a foster-daughter, Beverly Lilly, Sioux City; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five foster grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Tammen, Craig, and Lily Tammen of Merrill.
