LE MARS, Iowa -- Alvin J. Pageler, 76, of Le Mars passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post 724 of Brunsville, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Alvin John Pageler was born Jan. 4, 1926, in Le Mars, the son of Fred and Sena (Oltmanns) Pageler. He was baptized Feb. 7, 1926, at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Le Mars, and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa. He graduated from Ireton (Iowa) High School in 1943. On April 6, 1945, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served overseas in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 6, 1946. He attained the rank of technician fifth grade with the Ninth Ordinance Battalion.

He and Shirley Baack were married on July 3, 1955. They farmed near Craig and later west of Le Mars for many years. Due to his failing health, he retired from farming in the mid-1980s. He was a resident at Royal C. Johnson Veteran's Home in Sioux Falls, S.D., for a few years prior to returning to Le Mars to live at The Abbey. For the past nine years, he was living at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and American Legion Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post 724. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards.

He will be lovingly remembered by his two sons, Gary Pageler and Gene Pageler, both of Le Mars; two grandchildren, Justin and Ashley Pageler, both of Hinton, Iowa; and his mother, Sena Pageler of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his father, Fred; and several aunts and uncles.
