FUNERALS THIS WEEKEND FOR VIETNAM WAR DEAD

RODNEY L. KOERNER

Funeral services for PFC Rodney (Rocky) L. Koerner, 19, 500 Second Ave. SW, who was killed in action in Vietnam Friday, June 26 [1970] will be Friday at St. John's American Lutheran Church with Rev. Arnold Imbrock and Rev. Paul Tobiason officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens under the direction of Mauer Funeral Home.

Parents are Mrs. Franklin (Elaine Ahlrich) Wilhelmi and Melvin Koerner, both of LeMars.

Sunday a telegram was delivered signed by Maj. Gen. Kenneth G. Wicksham which stated in part that young Koerner was killed in action in Vietnam in a defensive position at nighttime when the area came under attack by hostile forces.

The young LeMars native was graduated from LeMars Community High School in June 1969 and enlisted in the army in August the same year. He was sent to Vietnam March 1 after training in medic school in Texas. He later worked in an army hospital in Vietnam.

Recently he was transferred to the airborne division and had hopes of working as a parachute medic. He was a member of the 1st battalion, 506th infantry division.

Young Koerner was born March 26, 1951, in LeMars. He was a member of St. John's American Lutheran Church.

Survivors in addition to his parents are three sisters, Renee, Kelly and Dawn, and his grandfather, Alfred Ahlrich of Phoenix, Ariz.
