MRS. OTTO KALAS
Mrs. Julia Christine Kalas, 74, rural Merrill, died Tuesday at Floyd Valley Hospital after an illness of nearly two years. She had been hospitalized for the last six months.
She was born March 18, 1893, at Harlan and came to Plymouth county in 1916 where she had lived since. Her parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Chris Sahl.
Her marriage to Otto Kalas took place March 14, 1916, at Harlan. Mr. Kalas was a longtime member of the Plymouth Electric Co-Op board and was succeeded upon his retirement by the couple’s son, Richard. The couple farmed southwest of Merrill for many years and served as leaders in community affairs.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in LeMars. Westmar College President Dr. H. H. Kalas, a nephew, will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens under the direction of Mauer funeral home.
A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel.
Survivors are her husband, Otto, two sons, Richard and Merlin, both of rural Merrill; three grandchildren; a brother, Thorwald Sahl, Harlan; and a sister, Edna Sahl, Kingsburg, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Kalas was a member of the First Baptist Church in LeMars.
