John H. Johnson, 79, retired Plymouth County farmer and longtime assessor, died unexpectedly Thursday, (March 1, 1990) in LeMars. He suffered a heart attack while attending the LeMars Lions Club noon luncheon.
Mr. Johnson was taken by ambulance from the American Legion Club dining room to Floyd Valley Hospital.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 5, at Calvary United Methodist Church with burial in Resthaven Memory Gardens. Rev. Ken Royar will officiate.
A prayer service will be held at 7p.m. Sunday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home, with the family present until 8:30 p.m.
John Helmer Johnson was born Oct. 8, 1910, in Day County, S.D., the son of Henry and Petra Frostad Johnson. He attended rural schools and graduated from Butler, S.D. High School, moving to Plymouth County in 1931.
His marriage to Doris Zimmerman took place Nov. 22, 1934, in Stanton Township. The couple farmed in Plymouth Township until 1979, when they moved to LeMars.
Mr. Johnson was a Plymouth County field assessor from 1964 until 1971. He was county assessor from 1972 until 1976, providing part-time help in the assessor’s office until 1983. He was also a township trustee and a school bus drive 13 years for the LeMars Community School District.
He was a longtime member of Merrill-Stanton Evangelical United Brethren Church and current member of Calvary United Methodist Church, LeMars Lions Club and LeMars Peer Counselors.
Surviving are his wife, Doris, LeMars; a son, Harley of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; three daughters, Plymouth County Recorder, Ina Gatts, LeMars, Lorna and her husband James Easton of Hawarden, and Mary and her husband, Robert Lykke, of Omaha.
Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Holger and his wife, Viola, of Aberdeen, S.D., and Herbert and his wife, Vernice, of Roslyn, S.D.; four sisters, Stella and her husband, Louis Dahl, of Sumner, Wash., Pearl and her husband, Charles Thayer of Puyallup, Wash., Minnie and her husband,Rev. Arthur Grorud of LeMars, and Elaine and her husband, Willis Chilson and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Johnson, all of Sisseton, S.D., and 21 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers in infancy and a brother, Lawrence in 1977.
