LE MARS, Iowa -- Sherla Clair Eyres, 85, of Hillsboro, Ore., formerly of Le Mars, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland, Ore.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Union Township Presbyterian Church in rural Le Mars, with the Rev. Lola Haskins officiating. Graveside services will be 9 a.m. Saturday in Resthaven Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Sherla was born June 18, 1917, in Algona, Iowa, to Charles and Ella Bergfield. Her father was a federal employee for the Office of Weights and Measures. Her mother was a manager of a ladies dress and millinery store.
She was the loving and devoted wife of Evart Winston Eyres for 66 years. After World War II, the couple returned home to Iowa and became the co-owners of a private airport, where he was a private flight instructor. The couple and their children lived on the family farm until relocating to Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she was a housewife, raising the three younger children. They then moved to Boone, Iowa, where she managed the family dry cleaning and laundry business. In 1971, The couple relocated to Garden Grove, Calif., with the two youngest children. He took over the position that his brother, Walter Eyres, held at EDD Investment. Upon retiring in 1988, they moved to Hillsboro, Ore.
She started a porcelain doll business while living in California, after taking classes and learning the art of doll making. She started her own business appropriately named "All Dolled Up" where she made antique reproduction dolls. She created the dolls from start to finish which included designing, pouring the porcelain, firing, painting detailed features, sewing all the clothes and displaying them. She sold her dolls at doll shows and at major conventions and also did custom orders.
She was an accomplished tailor and tailored women's and men's clothing for years. She was also an avid hand knitter and crocheted beautiful garments as well. While living in southern California, she was introduced to knitting machines and made beautiful afghans and sweaters with wonderful designs. While living in Oregon, she learned how to use a computer and made custom computer graphic greeting cards for family and friends for their birthdays, holidays and special occasions. She stayed in contact with family and friends by e-mail and learned about the ever-changing world through the Internet.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Delle and Kimberly; three sons, Philip, Charles and Timothy; and 11 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Evart on Dec. 27, 2001.
