LE MARS, Iowa -- Evart Winston Eyres, 86, of Hillsboro, Ore., formerly of Le Mars, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland, Ore.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Lawrence Eyres officiating. Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Evart was born Feb. 17, 1915, in Le Mars, the son of Charles and Grace Eyres. He worked on the family farm until the outbreak of World War II. He volunteered for the newly instituted U.S. Army Air Corps and trained and served in the Army Air Corps' elite Glider Pilot Division. He remained an active member of the WWII Army Air Corps Glider Pilot Association after the war, attending the group's annual conventions and providing historical data.
He returned home with his wife, Sherla, and became the co-owner of an airport, was a private instructor and ran the family farm until embarking on further enterprise that brought him to California and ultimately to Hillsboro. Flying airplanes was Evart's first love, a hobby he participated in up to his death.
He served on the board of directors of Oregon Chapter 105 Experimental Aircraft Association after his retirement from EDD Corporation in Southern California. He was very active in sport flying, serving as a flight instructor, building his own aircraft and was instrumental in spending much of this time assisting the local Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter in its various community service functions and events.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sherla; two daughters, Mary Delle and Kimberly; three sons, Philip, Charles and Timothy; and seven grandchildren.
