WILLIAM E. BARRETT

JEFFERSON, S.D. --- William E. “Bill” Barrett, 81, of Jefferson died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point, S.D., following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peters Catholic Church in Jefferson, with the Rev. Andrew Swietowski and Chaplain Susan Miller officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel in Sioux City.

Mr. Barrett was born Feb. 2, 1919, in Hinton, Iowa, the son of William and Minnie (O’Niel) Barrett.

He graduated from Huntington Park High School in California and attended junior college.

He married Elizabeth “Betty” Adams on May 25, 1944, in Vancouver, Wash.

He had lived in Jefferson for 50 years. He raised greyhound dogs and was employed as a security guard at IBP for 10 years. He retired in 1989.

He was named to the Hall of Fame for the National Greyhound Breeders Association, of which he was a member. He was a judge for the National Coarsing Association.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Bill Jr. of Plattsmouth, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Elizabeth “Libby” and Carl Kayl of Santa Ana, Calif.; six grandchildren, Kalleen, Kevin, Kelly and Kristopher Kayl, Genelle Derochie and Joseph Barrett; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, DeWayne “Buzz” Barrett.

Pallbearers will be Joseph, Dustin and Tim Barrett, Carl, Kelly, Kevin and Kristopher Kayl.
