WESTFIELD, Iowa --- Wurth Wendell Banks, 83, of Westfield died Monday, Oct. 2, 1995, at a Sioux City hospital following a long illness.
Services will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Berkemier Funeral Home Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Bryan Janssen of the First Presbyterian Church of Hospers, Iowa, officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Hoschler Post 186, American Legion conducting services. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Banks was born March 24, 1912, in Sioux City, the son of Joseph and Florence (Ross) Banks. He moved to Westfield as a child and graduated from Sunnyside School in 1930. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His basic training was a Camp Roberts, Calif. He was an ammunitions driver in the battles of North Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Anzio, Rome, southern France and the Rhineland. The last conflict was at Ardennes Alsace. He married Lenore F. Behrens July 6, 1946, in Sioux City. He was a lifelong farmer.
Mr. Banks served on the boards of the ASCS, SCS and Plymouth Electric Corp. He was a member of the Plymouth County Farm Bureau, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 77 of Sioux City, the Society of the 3rd Division U.S. Army Inc. T5 Cannon Company 7th Infantry Outpost 63. He was a 50-year member of Hoschler Post 18, American Legion of Akron. He was a longtime school bus driver and Little League manager.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Candace Banks of Salt Lake City, Utah; two brothers, Arden Banks and Belmer Banks, both of Westfield; a sister, Marian Postlewait of Westfield; three grandchildren, Pamela Husk, Judith and Scott Boersma; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, George Russell Banks; a daughter, Florence and her husband, LeRoy Boersma; one sister and nine brothers.
