REMSEN, Iowa --- Dorance Alexander Bacan, 83, of Remsen, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Orange City (Iowa) Municipal Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Robert L. Eggers officiating. Burial will be in Remsen City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Moeller Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Bacan was born June 30, 1916, in rural Madison, Iowa, the son of Lyle J. and Hilda (Tjebben) Bacan. He graduated from Pomeroy (Iowa) High School in 1932, and attended Barber College in Sioux City. He worked as a barber in Primghar, Iowa, 1936 to 1938.

He then attended Toben Business College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He returned to Primghar, where he worked as an accountant with Cambier Motor Co. He also served as office manager, parts manager and partner for 25 years.

He married Esther Hoeven on July 24, 1941, in Primghar.

He served in the U.S. Army with 104th Infantry Division during World War II, stationed in the European Theater. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant. Following his discharge, he returned to Primghar.

In 1948, the couple moved to Remen, where he was a partner with Cambier Motors until 1960. They moved to Orange City, where they lived for four years. In 1964, he became head cashier at Farmers Savings Bank in Remsen. He retired in 1981 as vice president and cashier.

He belonged to Christ Lutheran Church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Remsen Lions Club. He served on Remsen Cemetery board, Remsen Utility Board and Farmers Savings Bank board, and the Remsen City Council. He was named Remsen’s Citizen of the Year in 1993.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jane and her husband, Reg Morton and Mary Bacan, all of Baton Rouge, La.; a son and his wife, Tom and Bev, of Remsen; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
