EVELYN GRONEMEYER

LE MARS, Iowa --- Evelyn Genevieve Gronemeyer, 100, of LeMars, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in LeMars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mrs. Gronemeyer was born July 11, 1900, in Hand County, S.D., the daughter of Edgar and Lottie (Ross) Smith. She attended country school in South Dakota. She later moved to with her family to Hawarden, Iowa, where she graduated from Hawarden High School in 1922. She received her teaching credentials from South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. She returned to Iowa and taught country school in Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa.

She married William Gronemeyer on Feb. 12, 1924, in Sioux City. The couple farmed in Preston Township until retirement in 1948 and moved to LeMars. While living in LeMars, she was employed with Council Oak Grocery, Clausen Dry Cleaners, in the kitchen at Westmar College, and cooked at Central Café. She also took in sewing. Her husband died in 1981. She had been a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center for six years.

She had been a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa, St. John Lutheran Church in LeMars and for several years at Grace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Jean Hartmann of LeMars, Mildred and her husband, Wayne Winterfeld of Ord, Neb., Edith and her husband, Ronald Sechler of Meriden, Iowa, and Norma and her husband, Tommy Flint, of Mobile, Ala.; two daughters-in-law, Verlee Gronemeyer of Meriden and Evelyn Gronemeyer of Hawarden; a sister-in-law, Tena Gronemeyer of LeMars; 21 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Semple; two sons, Glenn and Russell; three grandsons, Bradley and Mitchell Hartmann and Jeffrey Sechler; a brother, Gerald Smith; and a sister, Lois Lee.
