DONALD ANTHONY

LE MARS, Iowa --- Donald B. Anthony, 69, a longtime LeMars resident, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 1996, at Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in LeMars with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, LeMars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars with a 4 p.m. Altar Society rosary, 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service and 7:30 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary.

Mr. Anthony was born Nov. 27, 1926, in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Eugene and Mary (Schleis) Anthony. He moved to LeMars area as a child and attended the Union Consolidated School. He served in the United States Army during World War II in Japan. He then went into business with his father at Anthony’s DX in LeMars. He married Helen Frerichs on Oct. 17, 1950, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LeMars. He then operated Anthony’s Super Service at the Sinclair Station in LeMars with his father. In the mid-1960’s he started Anthony’s Westside, a service station and towing service just west of LeMars. He also drove the school bus for Gehlen Catholic Schools in LeMars for several years.

Mr. Anthony was a member of St. James Catholic Church in LeMars, the Knights of Columbus Trinity Council 1466 and American Legion Wasmer Post 241. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Judy Anderson and her husband Chris of Broken Arrow, Okla, Joan Rolling of Alta, Iowa, Jean Anthony and Julie Orban and her husband Armand, all of LeMars; three sons, Jim and his wife Nancy, of Creston, Iowa, John and his wife Deb, of LeMars, and Jeff of Orange City, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; three sisters, Eileen Langel and her husband Vic, and Bernice Koopman and her husand, Mark, all of LeMars, and Mrs. Helen Langel of Norfolk, Neb.; two brothers, Albert “Babe” and his wife, Syb, and Leonard “Baldy” and his wife, Joanne, all of LeMars; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Vonnie Anthony of LeMars, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elmer and LaVern; and a brother-in-law, Cliff Langel.
