AKRON, Iowa -- Viola M. Moffatt, 84, of Akron passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at First Church of Christ in Akron, with the Rev. Matthew Wentz of Le Mars (Iowa) Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Akron. Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Viola M. Moffatt was born July 30, 1920, in Akron, the daughter of Lloyd and Edith (Hanson) Peck. She attended early schooling in Akron and later in Hawarden, Iowa. She graduated with a normal teaching certificate from Hawarden High School in 1938. She later attended Briar Cliff University, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in education. She began her teaching career at Ridge Country School and later other country schools in Iowa and South Dakota. She taught school at Hinton (Iowa) Community School and retired after 38 years of teaching.

She married Allen C. Moffatt in April 1942. He passed away in 1995. The couple were lifelong residents of the Akron-Westfield area, where they lived on the family farm and farmed for many years.

She was a member of Le Mars Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She also was a member of the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association. She enjoyed cake decorating, cooking and quilting. She enjoyed writing and wrote several unpublished books.

Survivors include four sons, Lyle Moffatt and his wife, Gerrie of Sioux City, Richard Moffatt and his wife, Chris of Akron, David Moffatt and his wife, Rosanne of Denver, Colo., and Kevin Moffatt of Westfield, Iowa; 17 grandchildren, Karl Dicks and his wife, Estelle, Paul Dicks and his wife, Libby, Kristy (Moffatt) Bowman and her husband, Larry, Scott Moffatt and his wife, Misty, Tom Dicks and his wife, Heather, Brett Moffatt and his wife, Becky, Lori (Dicks) Horsma and her husband, Donnie, Stacy Moffatt and his wife, Debb, Shane Moffatt and his wife, Jamie, Jessica (Moffatt) Lavaway and her husband, Mason, Cody Moffatt, Misty R. Moffatt, Shawn Moffatt and his wife, Jen, Kelly Moffatt and his wife, Julie, Kashea (Moffatt) Medina and her husband, Eddie, Gennie Moffatt and Mikeal Moffatt; 31 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Joyce Franklin; a grandson, Michael Dicks in 1988; and a great-granddaughter, Paula Dicks in 1989.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Mackey, Richard Porter, Mike Porter, Tom Leaverton, Tobey Harvey and Elliott Waddell.
