LE MARS, Iowa -- Dorothy Utesch, 78, of Le Mars died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at her residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Dorothy Irene Calhoon was born July 6, 1923, in Le Mars, the daughter of Jim and Nora (Wilmes) Calhoon. She graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1941. Following high school, she attended Western Union College, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught country school west of Le Mars for a few years.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Earl Utesch on Oct. 25, 1945, in Le Mars. The couple operated Westside Cafe in Le Mars for 12 years. She worked for Aalfs Manufacturing in Le Mars for a couple of years. Earl started his career with McCormack Distributing in 1961. During those early years, Earl traveled frequently and Dorothy remained at home caring for her children and ailing mother.

Dorothy was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. A particular joy to her was the annual family trip to Las Vegas. She enjoyed outings with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her many friends. For many years the couple would host the grandchildren during the Plymouth County Fair. The county fair was a very special occasion for the couple. She was very proud of the accomplishment that all of her grandchildren are college graduates.

Survivors include her three children, Diana and her husband, Dennis Bixenman of Le Mars, and her twin brother, Dan and his wife, Donna Utesch of Akron, Iowa, and Terry Utesch and Mary Reynolds of Le Mars; seven grandchildren, Scott and Susan Bixenman of Le Mars and their three children, Elizabeth, Emma and Jakob, Rob and Janelle Bixenman of Le Mars, Jami Bixenman of Chicago, Ill., Lisa and Mike Peters of Creston, Iowa, and their children, Ashley, Ryan and Tyler, Pam and Kevin Anderson of Akron and their children, Charlie, Max and Jack, Neal and Hiedi Utesch of Correctionville, Iowa, and their son, Taiylor, and Wesley and Charrisse Reynolds of Mount Vernon, Iowa; and a host of many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl on Dec. 11, 1997; a son, Jackie in infancy in 1957; a sister, Eva DeRaad; and a granddaughter, Shannon Bixenman.

Pallbearers will be Scott Bixenman, Rob Bixenman, Neal Utesch, Wesley Reynolds, Kevin Anderson, Mike Peters, Wayne Ahrendt and Don Winterfeld. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Utesch, Randall Jensen, Doug Utesch, Dennis Gerrietts, Dan Winterfeld, David Winterfeld and Wendell Zoeller.
