Stanley E. Davis

HINTON, Iowa -- Stanley Eugene Davis, 84, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Hinton, passed away Sunday Feb. 27, 2005.

Services were held March 3 at North Jacksonville Chapel of Peoples Family Funeral Home, where Dr. Terry Gore officiated. Family graveside services were held March 4 in Florida's National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., with military rites.

Mr. Davis was born in Hinton and had lived in Jacksonville since 1950. He was a retired salesman from the building industry and a member of the United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. He was a "Mustang," having achieved the rank of staff sergeant before receiving a direct battlefield commission in January 1944. He received many awards and citations including, the American Defense Service Ribbon, European African and Middle Eastern Ribbons with three bronze stars, the Purple Heart Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Silver Star Medal with an oak leaf cluster, the Combat Infantry Badge and was nominated for the Medal of Honor.

He was a life member of the National Order of Battlefield Commissions, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 88, Riverview Lodge 306 F.M. & A.M., York Rite, Scottish Rite and Morocco Shrine. He served with the Crippled Children's committee and was a member of the Phoenix Avenue Gang.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Paul and Jade Davis; a sister, Mary Feeney of Kingsley, Iowa; a grandson and his wife; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Leslie Davis; two brothers, Duane and Russell; and a sister, Esther Denlinger.

Stanley will be missed by all.
