HINTON, Iowa -- John Dixon, 85, of Sleepy Eye, Minn., formerly of Hinton, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm, Minn.

Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at Hinton United Methodist Church in Hinton. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Arrangements are under the direction of Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm.

John Edward Dixon, the son of Anthony and Martha (Arrowsmith) Dixon, was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Iona, Minn. As a child, he moved with his family to Hinton, where he graduated from high school in 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on July 16, 1942, serving in New Zealand, Tarawa Atoll, Hilo (Hawaii), Saipan and Tinian.

He was united in marriage to Eva Weinrich on Sept. 19, 1942, in San Diego, Calif. Following his honorable discharge, they moved to Hinton, where he worked for the Farmer's Elevator Company. They also owned and operated the D&J Cafe for many years. His specialty was his cinnamon rolls. In 1982, they retired and moved to Bella Vista, Ark. They moved to New Ulm in 1995, residing in the Real Life Cooperative. He moved to assisted living in Sleepy Eye and became a resident of Oak Hill Living Center in 2001.

He was an avid golfer and worked with stained glass. He was president of the Hinton Civic Club for many years and was a Boy Scout leader.

Survivors include his wife, Eva, a resident of Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax, Minn.; his children, John Dixon and his wife, Roxann, of Camanche, Iowa, Gwen and her husband, Karl Papierniak, of New Ulm, and Shirley (a sister-in-law raised as a daughter from an early age) and her husband, Bob McKim of Omaha; his grandchildren, Aaron, Angela, Elizabeth, Ashtyn, Alexandra, Adam and Alec; sisters-in-law, Francis Hanson of Remsen, Iowa, and Dorothy and her husband, Joe McKay, of Windsor, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the Hinton Community School Athletic Department in Hinton.
