ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa -- Vernon F. Calkin, 87, of Arnolds Park passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at his home.

Services were held Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake, Iowa. The Rev. Phill Andreason officiated. Burial was in Kingsley Cemetery in Kingsley, Iowa. Arrangements were under the direction of Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.

Vernon F. Calkin was born July 9, 1916, in Hinton, Iowa, the son of Fred and Martha (Kroger) Calkin. He was raised and educated in the Hinton area.

On Feb. 18, 1940, Vernon was united in marriage to Betty L. Milton in Kingsley. The couple made their home near Kingsley, where they farmed. Upon retiring from farming, Vernon worked at the U.S. Post Office in Kingsley. He served on the school board for the one-room school west of Kingsley and was a member of the Farm Bureau. The couple moved to Arnolds Park in 1983.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake, where he and Betty served as custodians for several years. Vernon was also a member of the Arnolds Park Rotary Club. He enjoyed fishing with his fishing buddies and grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Judith Gruenhagen (Warren) of Stillwater, Minn., Susan Ricketts of Spirit Lake, James Calkin (Linda) of Corvallis, Ore., Lynda Calkin-Wolf (Mark) of Richardson, Texas, and William Calkin of Parker, Colo.; his grandchildren, Robert Ricketts, Michelle Smith (Virgil), Richard and Michael Gruenhagen, Christine Christensen (Jesper) Jeff and Rosco Huebner, Sarah Calkin, Zachery, James and Michael Leah Wolf, Jesse, Dillon and Chance Calkin; five great-grandchildren; and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; a brother, Lloyd; and a sister, Hazel Fry.
