Kyle Cobb, 20, of LeMars, was killed instantly early Thursday morning in a one car accident near LeMars.
Highway Patrol trooper William Wruck said Cobb was headed west on C-38 about 1 ½ miles west of the NIPCO corner when the car smashed head-on into the south bridge abutment.
Wruck said Cobb, who was alone apparently fell asleep at the wheel.
A passing motorist discovered the wreckage at 3:07 a.m. The body was taken to Floyd Valley Hospital by the LeMars ambulance.
The Plymouth County Sheriff's Department assisted in the investigation. The demolished 1973 Olds, owned by Cobb, was towed to Mayrose body shop.
His death was the fifth Plymouth County traffic fatality in 1980.
Kyle was born September 24, 1960, at Loring Air Force Base, Maine, to Forrest and Dee Cobb. He was a 1979 graduate of LeMars community high school, and was employed at Wells Dairy, LeMars.
The family had lived at Cedar Rapids for five years before coming to LeMars 13 years ago. His mother is the former Delores J. Bristley.
Kyle was a member of the United Methodist Church in LeMars. He was a former Daily Sentinel carrier. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the first United Methodist Church in LeMars. Reverend Leonard Root will officiate in burial will be in LeMars Memorial Cemetery (sic-Resthaven Memory Gardens], under direction of the Mauer funeral home in LeMars.
Survivors are his parents, LeMars; three sisters, Mrs. Mark (Cindy) Mammen, Sioux City; Mrs. Dee Jay (Cay) Donlin, St. Paul; and Carla Cobb, LeMars; a brother, Craig Cobb of Minneapolis; and his grandmothers, Mrs. Marjorie Cobb, Storm Lake, and Mrs. Nina Bristley, Conrad, Iowa.
