LE MARS, Iowa -- Evelyn Winter, 94, of Le Mars passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Private family graveside services will be Saturday in Sioux City.

Evelyn E. Roths was born Sept. 2, 1908, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of George and Grace (King) Roths. The family moved to Le Mars, where she graduated from high school. She later graduated from Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

On Sept. 15, 1934, Evelyn and Merlin Charles Winter where united in marriage in Boxholm, Iowa. the couple made their home on a farm near Hinton, Iowa. They raised various grains and livestock in that area for many years. In addition to assisting her husband with the farm operations, she taught elementary school at numerous locations in Plymouth County, Iowa. She retired from teaching in 1982, from the Kingsley-Pierson Community School system. The couple retired from farming in 1992, and moved to Le Mars.

Mr. Winter passed away July 16, 1994. She remained in Le Mars and worked as a part-time assistant in the retail department of the Vander Meer Bakery. She moved to Brentwood Good Samaritan Center on Aug. 24, 1999.

She was a longtime member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Le Mars and was active in the Martha-Dorcas Circle. Her lifetime enjoyment was the love of her family and music. She was an accomplished pianist and vocalist.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son and his wife, Gilbert and Pat Winter of Le Mars; a grandson and his wife, Scott and Stacey Winter of Sioux City; two brothers and their wives, John and Dale Roths of Pensacola, Fla., and Robert and Sara Roths of Odessa, Texas; a sister-in-law, Gladys Taylor of Brunsville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merlin; and an infant son.
