CATHERINE BERTHA WALDUM

Catherine Bertha Waldum, 94, of Sioux City died Friday, March 30, 2001, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. at Morningside Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Waldum was born Feb. 18, 1907, in Grant Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth (Westhoff) Ahrendt. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from LeMars High School in 1926. She attended Western Union College and received a teaching certificate. She taught in country school in Plymouth County. She married Fred D. Onken on Feb. 1, 1934. They resided on the farm. In 1950 she moved to Sioux City and owned and operated the East End Café She married John Waldum on Nov. 26, 1955. He died Dec. 1, 1972. She was employed at T.S. Martin for several years until her retirement.

She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and active in the church circles. She enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting and painting.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Marilyn and Elmer Karley of Sheldon, Iowa; two grandchildren, Kathy Brooks and Bryan Karley; two great-grandchildren, a step daughter-in-law, Dorothy Waldum of Lake Worth, Fla.; a stepson, Orville Waldum of Greenfield, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Jacobs of California; and three stepgrandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert and Carl Ahrendt; four sisters, Mary Binneboese, Sophia Zieger, Louise Kruse and Ida Petersen; a daughter, Betty in infancy; a granddaughter, Rebecca Jo Karley; and a stepson, John Waldum, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Harold and Arnold Binneboese, Ralph and Herbert Zieger, Leonard and Charles Kruse, Bryan Karley and Gary Brooks.
