SHELDON, Iowa -- Lloyd Brinkman, 87, of Sheldon passed away Saturday, March 12, 2005, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Robert Schimmer officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. and a Sheldon Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.
Lloyd Brinkman, the son of Gerrit and Ruth (Kreulen) Brinkman, was born Nov. 16, 1917, in Sheldon. As a young child he moved to Matlock, Iowa, receiving his education in the Matlock Public School, graduating from Sheldon High School. He attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux Falls, S.D., prior to entering the U.S. Army in May 1941. He served with the Army Corps of Engineers stateside and in the Philippines before being discharged in 1946, with the rank of captain.
He was united in marriage to Lorraine Beldt on Nov. 29, 1941, in Lebanon, Mo. The young couple made their home in Matlock, where he was the co-owner of Brinkman Produce until 1965. At that time, he joined Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company as an agent until his retirement in 1994. His wife, Lorraine preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 1960, in Sioux City.
On Aug. 25, 1962, he and Jeanette Susan Gysbertsen were united in marriage in Struble, Iowa. They made their home in Sheldon. She preceded him in death on Jan. 31, 2003, in Sheldon.
He was member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a very active member of the Sheldon Knights of Columbus 1564, where he had been the treasurer for the past 13 years. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7354 and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, both in Sheldon. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.
He leaves to cherish his memories two sons and their wives, Lyle C. and Sue Brinkman of Lexington, Ky., and Lowell J. and Sheri Brinkman of Omaha; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Ben Durant, Christopher and Kristy Brinkman, Jeffrey and Michelle Ferzley and Jamie and Dariush Ghaffari; four great-grandchildren, Matthew Durant, Joshua and Jonathan Ghaffari and Autumn Ferzley; two brothers and their wives, Gerald and Jeannette Brinkman of Howard, S.D., and Ronald and Donna Brinkman of Sheldon; a sister and her husband, Ruth and Donald Lenderink of Orange City, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by both wives; his parents; and a brother, Lt. Elmer P. Brinkman, who was declared MIA in 1942.
