AKRON, Iowa -- Julia L. Taylor, 89, of Akron passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at Akron Care Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, with the Rev. Craig Collison of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 9 p.m., a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a parish rosary, all at Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
Julia Louisa Taylor was born Dec. 11, 1915, on a farm near Westfield, Iowa, the daughter of Edward B. and Mary Josephine (Pelroy) Welch. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Westfield. She attended school in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School. Following high school, she received her teaching certificate in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Afterwards, she returned to the Westfield area and taught at Port Country School.
She was united in marriage to Daryl Taylor on July 2, 1939, at St. Patrick's Rectory in Akron. The couple lived on the Taylor family farm near Akron in Westfield Township for many years. Together, they were the parents of five daughters. After raising her children, she worked for "Green Thumb" at Mid-Sioux Opportunities in Akron. Daryl passed away Aug. 23, 1982, in Rochester, Minn. She continued to live on the farm until moving to the Akron Care Center in February 2002.
She was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Westfield, where she was active in the St. Catherine's Guild and most recently she was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. She was a former member of the Ladies of St. Joseph's and Catholic Daughters of America. She also was a former member of the St. Patrick's choir. She was a member of the Happy Farmerettes neighborhood club, a former 4-H leader for the Westfield Cloverettes and a charter member of the Akron Saddle Club. Most recently, she participated in the Akron Care Center Bell Choir and Wheelchair Square Dancing. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, fishing and hunting. She also enjoyed cooking, camping, sewing and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include five daughters and their husbands, Charylene and Gary Banks of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jeanne and Jerry Parks of Bucklin, Mo., Nancy and Chris Nystrup of Akron, Lillian and Steve Heeren of Akron and Marjane and Robert Monahan of Tallahassee, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; seven brothers, Bill, Ed, Joe, John, Dan, Mike and Matt Welch; and a sister, Agnes Toben.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Shawn Banks, Sherwyn Banks, Shane Banks, Jeff Parks, Thomas Nystrup, Daryl Nystrup, Jorgen Nystrup, Derek Heeren, Matt Heeren and Ethan Heeren. Honorary pallbearers will be Julie Parks Towner, Heather Heeren, Jessica Heeren Jacobsen, Lindsay Heeren and Kelsey Heeren.
