MOVILLE, Iowa -- Wayne W. Luse, 85, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Moville, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, in Mesa following a two-month illness with cancer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Moville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Harold E. Werley officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Christy-Smith McCulloch Chapel in Moville.

Mr. Luse was born Oct. 26, 1919, in the country outside of Kingsley, Iowa, the son of William and Mattie (Leinbaugh) Luse. He graduated from Strawberry Point (Iowa) High School in 1937 and attended Morningside College in Sioux City. He graduated from the University of Iowa in May 1950 with a bachelor of science degree.

He married Virginia Sanborn on May 25, 1947, in Moville. Virginia died Oct. 17, 1992 after 45 great years of marriage.

After their marriage, they lived in Iowa City before moving to Moville in 1950. He lived in Moville until his death while wintering at his home in Mesa.

He worked for Farmer Mutual Insurance Association in Moville with Fred McDermott from July 1950 until retiring. Later he associated with Larry Etler and Rene Goodwin at the Luse-Etler-Goodwin Insurance Agency. He became secretary/manager in 1957. He was elected to the board of directors of Grinnell Mutual Insurance Company in 1967. He retired as chairman of the Grinnell board in 1986.

He was a member of Moville United Methodist Church and served as treasurer for five years. He served on the building committee for the new church construction. He was a member of the Moville Chamber of Commerce, served on the Woodbury Central School board for 12 years and was chairman of the board during the reorganization of the district, served as Woodbury County Fair manager for five years and served in the Woodbury County Board of Review until his death. He also was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star and served as Legion, Adjutant, Master of Masons and Worthy Patron of the Eastern Star. He served as the first Cubmaster of the Scouts in Moville, as president of the Meadows Golf Club and as chairman of the town of Moville Zoning Board of Review.

He served in the U.S. Navy before and during World War II from 1937 until the end of the war. His name is included in the National World War II Memorial Registry.

He touched many lives and will be truly missed for his love of life, his teasing ways, his sense of humor and his passion for the game of golf and for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include a son, Bill Luse of Minneapolis; two daughters, Cynthia Luse-McKeen and her husband, Doug McKeen of Apple Valley, Minn., and Rosalie Luse of Sioux City; two grandchildren, Hanna McKeen and Jordan McKeen; a brother and his wife, Sylvan and Donna Luse of Hornick, Iowa; three sisters, Audrey Georgeson of Moville, Janice Farnum of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Lucille and her husband, Duane Knos of Rupert, Idaho; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia; a son, James; his brothers, Darold, Melvin, William Jr. and Kenneth; and his sisters, Wilma and Lois.
