Lola Theresa Lockard, 93, longtime Morningside area resident of Sioux City, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital following a short illness. She was a resident of Sunrise Retirement Home at the time of her death. In recent years she had fought several health adversities with determination and courage.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jon Gaul officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Nelson-Berger Funeral Home.

Lola was born April 11, 1909, to John Allen and Rosa (Schneider) Jones on a farm east of Merrill, Iowa. Her great-grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Schneider, and grandfather, Jacob Schneider, were among early German pioneer settlers to the Floyd Valley in 1857. She attended school in Merrill and college at Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. She taught school in Plover, Iowa, for several years before her marriage.

She married Gordon William Lockard on March 5, 1931, in Fairmont, Minn. Her husband preceded her in death in 1975. Over the years, they made their homes in Hollywood and North Hollywood, Calif.; Provo, Utah; and Early, Le Mars and Sioux City, Iowa.

In previous years, Lola was an active member of the Floyd Golf Course, United Methodist Women's Group of Grace United Methodist Church, Morningside Riparian Study Club, and a member of several bridge groups. Talented in handwork, she did many sewing, crochet and knitting projects and also painted with oils. An avid traveler, she had travelled worldwide extensively. She had many lifelong friends in the Le Mars, Merrill and Sioux City areas, many who have preceded her in death.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary Jo (Sidney) Eckerman of Sioux City, Judith (Don) Miller of Delavan, Wis., and Linda (Don) Hill of Mercersburg, Penn. She was a loving grandmother to Shelli (Scott) Gerkin of Sioux City, Tracy (Gregg) Jarecki of Libertyville, Ill., Sidney (Chris) Eckerman Jr. of Belvidere, Neb., Timothy (Marlo) Miller of Des Moines, Todd Eckerman of Aurora, Colo., Rhonda Eckerman of Aurora, Colo., Dean (Sarah) Hill of Washington, D.C., Don (Sabrina) Hill Jr. of Rohoboth, Del., and 12 great-grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by a sister-in-law, Pauline Jones of Storm Lake, Iowa, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Gordon, she was preced in death by a sister, Cleo Furrow; a brother, Alfred Jones; and her parents, Rosa and John Allen Jones.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Sidney Eckerman Jr., Timothy Miller, Dean Hill, Don Hill Jr., and great-grandson, Joseph Eckerman.
