Maynard J. Bauerly, 86, of Sioux City died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Timothy Hogan officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Ellendale, Iowa. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 9 p.m., a rosary at 7:15 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 8 p.m., all at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Bauerly was born in rural Plymouth County, west of Merrill, Iowa, on April 19, 1915, the son of Joseph and Luella (Barnet) Bauerly. He was raised in rural Merrill and attended country school in Plymouth County. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in New Guinea, Hawaii and the Philippines. He was a member of the 55th Field Artillery.

He married Fern Ellen Maupin on Feb. 9, 1946, in Washington, D.C. The couple lived in Washington for six months and then moved to Sioux City. Mr Bauerly was a truck driver and drove for Sioux Transportation Co. for 31 years. He retired in 1977.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, the Teamsters Union and had served as a 4-H leader for 25 years. He loved working with horses. He trained trick horses and provided horse rides at many community events. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife. He also was known for raising a large garden at his residence in Leeds for many years.

Survivors include his wife of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Nick Marx of McCook Lake, S.D., and Joyce and Ed Stone of South Sioux City; a son, John Bauerly of Olathe, Kan.; six grandchildren, Steve and his wife, Paula Marx, Greg and his wife, Corri Marx, Matt and his wife, Jeni Marx, Tony Marx and Elisha and Elizabeth Bauerly; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Karly Marx; three brothers and their wives, Vernon and Dorothy Bauerly and Robert and Betty Bauerly, all of Sioux City, and Donald and Betty Bauerly of Sergeant Bluff; and a sister-in-law, Janet Bauerly of St. Cloud, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Bauerly; and a brother, Francis Bauerly.

Pallbearers will be Bob Jr., David, Jimmy, Tim, Donn and Bill Bauerly. His grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
