Fern Ellen Bauerly, 81, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Sunrise Retirement Community.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Timothy J. Hogan officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Ellendale, Iowa. Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bauerly was born Dec. 11, 1921, in Marceline, Mo., the daughter of John and Ellen (Speyerer) Maupin. She was raised in Missouri and graduated from Shelbina (Mo.) High School. She attended Gem City Business College in Quincy, Ill. She then took and passed her civil service examination and moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Office of Defense Transportation. She also worked part time for Sears Department Store.

She married Maynard J. Bauerly on Feb. 9, 1946, in Washington, D.C. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1946. After moving to Sioux City, she became a stay-at-home mom, taking care her children and husband. Mr. Bauerly passed away Oct. 6, 2001, in Sioux City.

The couple had a large garden at their home in Leeds for many years. She was well-known for her canning and baking. She also was a seamstress and had a talent for making clothes, quilts and crocheting.

She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and helped out at the St. Michael's Grade School picnics.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Nick Marx of McCook Lake, S.D., and Joyce and Ed Stone of South Sioux City; a son, John Bauerly of Olathe, Kan.; six grandchildren, Steve Marx and his wife, Paula, Greg Marx and his wife, Corri, Matt Marx and his wife, Jeni, Tony Marx, Elisha Bauerly and Elizabeth Bauerly; and three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Karly and Addison Marx.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert and James Maupin.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
