WILLIAM D. BOULTON
William David Boulton, 74, of Hinton, died Friday (Oct. 28, 1983) at his home.
Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars. Burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens in LeMars. Rev. Harold Norheim officiated.
A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
Mr. Boulton was born Nov. 11, 1909, in Wichita, Kan., to William and Viola Figley Boulton. He moved to Luton when a small child.
He joined the U.S. Navy and serves 21 years. After discharge he moved to Hinton. Mr. Boulton married Katherine VanderKooi on Dec. 19, 1951, in Dakota City.
Boulton in 1939 survived the sinking of the United States submarine, Squalas. He, with 15 other navy men were entombed for more than 29 hours at the ocean floor. The men were brought up 240 feet by a diving shell. He had at first been listed as “probably dead.”
He was a member of the Casper Post 477 of the American Legion in Hinton and the Disabled American Veterans of Sioux City.
Survivors are his wife; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Bolton, of Kansas City, Kan.; one step-brother, Clare Holder of Sioux City; four step-sons, Fred VanderKooi of Hinton, Duane VanderKooi of Lithonica, Ga., Pete VanderKooi of Rocklin, Calif., and Dale VanderKooi of Merrill; one step-daughter, Mrs. Harold (Judy) Lenig of Redondo Beach, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
