SENEY, Iowa -- Elda A. Davis, 88, of Seney passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church LC-MS in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with the family present 5:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Elda Alwine Hemmig was born Nov. 27, 1914, near May City, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Louise (Kraft) Hemmig. She attended country school near May City. Following her education, she moved to California, where she worked for various families as a housekeeper.
During World War II, she was volunteering her time at the USO, when she met Charles Edgar Davis. The couple married on March 17, 1943, at Fort Ord, Calif. Shortly thereafter, Charles was shipped overseas to the Pacific Theater during the war. Upon his return, the couple moved near Hartley, Iowa, where they farmed for a few years. Elda and her family moved to Seney, where they owned and operated a general store and post office. She later went to work for Aalfs Manufacturing and remained there for several years.
During her retirement she found more time to dedicate to her flower and vegetable gardening. She also volunteered her time as a greeter at Grace Lutheran Church, helped with the ladies groups, delivered Meals on Wheels, and in early years, served as a 4-H leader. She enjoyed fishing, baking, bowling and is remembered by her family as an excellent cook.
She will be lovingly remembered by her four daughters and their husbands, June and Dave Dahlstrom of West Valley City, Utah, Janice and Gary Jenney of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Arlene and Terry Rachuy of Marshall, Wis., and Dottie and Paul Delperdang of Le Mars; nine grandchildren, Todd and Trent VanDe Brake, Tammy Rinerson, Lisa and Lindsey Jenney, Jon Moran, Stacy Rolfes, Tracy and Ryan Delperdang; and 12 great-grandchildren, Shadyn, Paxton and Colby VanDe Brake, Cody and Zachary Rinerson, Ashley, Abrielle and Anna Lisa VanDe Brake, Alex, Kaitlin, Bailey and Dominiq Moran.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles on May 2, 1982; and infant son, Charles; a sister and her husband, Eilene and Earl Schwarting.
Pallbearers will be Todd and Trent VanDe Brake, Jon Moran, Ryan Delperdang, Aaron Rolfes and Jesse Steeg.
