LeMars Sentinel, Thursday, October 6, 2005Norma Louise (Mohning) Miller, 76, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, at Good Samaritan Village, Brentwood Center, in Le Mars.
Norma Louise (Mohning) Miller was born April 30, 1929 in Marion Township, Plymouth County, the daughter of Louis H. and Wilhelmina (Wiebke) Mohning. Norma grew up on the family farm in Marion Township and attended rural elementary school. She graduated from Le Mars High School in 1946 and attended Westmar College in Le Mars.
Norma was employed with the Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel and at the Plymouth County Courthouse. She began her career at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars on June 1, 1950. After special in-service training provided through the American Lutheran Church Colleges and Seminaries, she was commissioned as a Parish Worker of the American Lutheran Church. Norma was later designated as Associate in Ministry after mergers formed the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. In addition to her work at St. John's, Norma served the larger church body as a member of the District Youth Board of the Iowa American Lutheran Church. She also was a member of the Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp Board. Norma was active in parish education in the American Lutheran Church through working with church worker's institutes. Norma retired in February 1985.
Norma and Floyd Miller were united in marriage on Feb. 10, 1985, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. They made their home in Carter Lake for five years before returning to Le Mars.
Norma was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Le Mars and was active in its women's organizations. She was also a member of the Brentwood Good Samaritan Auxiliary in Le Mars and the Le Mars Community School District Alumni Association.
Survivors include her four brothers, Merlin Mohning and his wif,e Marge of Paonia, Colo., Louis F. Mohning and his wife, Lillian of Remsen, Raymond Mohning of Kingsley and Henry Mohning of Le Mars; two sisters, Alverna Lowrey of Mariposa, Calif., and Esther Sjobakken of Stanton, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Ronald Utesch of Le Mars; and a sister-in-law, Hilda Mohning of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Floyd; a brother, Arnold Mohning; and a sister, Helen C. Utesch.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer -- Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 3 to 5 p.m. and there will be a prayer service at 4 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
