Fred Grosenheider, 91, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Fred William Grosenheider was born April 14, 1915, on the family farm in Preston Township, the son of Robert and Meta (Pageler) Grosenheider. Fred attended country school in Preston Township. He was united in marriage to Bernice Jurgensen April 2, 1937, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township. Fred and Bernice eventually moved to a farm near Craig. He continued to farm until the mid 1970s when his son Ken returned to farm. Fred and Bernice built a home west of Craig and continued to assist his son Ken with the farm. In 2002, Fred and Bernice moved to Le Mars.

Fred was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township.

Fred will be remembered for his sense of humor. He loved to tell jokes and read the comics daily. He enjoyed reading the paper from cover to cover and also eating homemade ice cream. Family was very important to Fred and he treasured the time spent with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Bernice of Le Mars; three daughters: Ardis Schmitt of Sioux City, Karen and her husband Jerry Bertsch of Minneapolis, Minn., and Jan and her husband Tom Guerber of Minneapolis, Minn.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Josie Popken, Vera Mammen, and Ann Jones, all of Le Mars; a brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Violet Grosenheider; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Meta (Pageler) Grosenheider; a son, Kenneth; a grandson, Tony Schmitt; a sister, Elsie Oetken; and a son-in-law, C.T. "Smitty" Schmitt.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township with the Rev. Jerry Crow officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will continue Saturday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Paulbearers will be Steve Westhoff, Jeff Bertsch, Dan Schmitt, Tim Schmitt, Chris Grosenheider, and Kelly Nelson.
