LeMars Sentinel, Wednesday, August 24, 2005Stan Frerichs, 70, of Le Mars, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Stanley Henry Frerichs was born Sept. 19, 1934, on a farm in Plymouth County, the son of Claus B. and Minnie (Satthoff) Frerichs. He was raised and educated in the Le Mars area, graduating from Le Mars Community High School in 1952. On Sept. 20, 1955, Stan enlisted into active duty in the U.S. Army. He proudly served his country in the Army and transferred to the Iowa Army National Guard, Co. A, 2nd BN (Mech), 133 Infantry, in Le Mars. Stan later extended his service to the Iowa Air National Guard, 185th Tactical Fighter Group, in Sergeant Bluff, and received his honorable discharge on Sept. 17, 1994, having attained the rank of Master Sergeant.
Following high school, Stan continued his education at Wartburg College in Waverly, before receiving a bachelor of arts degree from Westmar College in Le Mars in 1958. He performed his student teaching at Gehlen Catholic Schools in Le Mars. Stan began his 36-year teaching career at Le Mars Community High School in 1958. He taught literature and English composition. On June 2, 1960, Stan and Marlys Joan De Jong were united in marriage at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. They made their home in Le Mars. Through summer classes Stan earned his master's degree from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion in 1963. Following his retirement in 1994, Stan taught classes for Western Iowa Tech Community College at their extended campus in Le Mars.
Stan was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. He taught Sunday School, confirmation, served as council president, and sang in the choir. He enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends. Stan was a gentle, kind, person who loved his family and was respected by so many former students and fellow Air Guard members.
Survivors include his wife, of 45 years, Marlys of Le Mars; four sons, Mike of Louisiana, Jeff and Greg, both of Le Mars; Curt and his wife Karli of Spencer; six grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah, Emily, Jordan, Samuel and Westin; two sisters, Carol Rowe and her husband Charles of Lake Park, and Ardyth Fisher and her husband, Bernard of Helena, Mont.; two brothers, George and his wife, Kathy of Le Mars and Leon of Anaheim, California; three sisters-in-law, Donna Frerichs of Le Mars, Lorraine Krommendyk and her husband, Leonard of Orange City, and Carolyn Scheider and her husband, Max of Austin, Texas; special family friends Betty and Boyd Steenblock of Orange City; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Gerald; a brother-in-law, Ron Fick; a sister-in-law, Peggy Frerichs; two nieces, Rhonda Krommendyk and Lyn TeVelde; and two nephews, Richard A. Frerichs and Tom Frerichs.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Wasmer Post #241of the American Legion will be proving military honors at the cemetary. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Monday) at the Mauer -- Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Christopher Frerichs, Sarah Frerichs, Emily Frerichs, Jordan Frerichs, Samuel Frerichs, Betty Steenblock, Westin Smith and Karli Frerichs. Pallbearers will be Gary Frerichs, Perry Fick, Mark Strub, Tom Bitterly, Bill Conger, Chad Plueger Tami Fisher, Barb Kady, and Cary Collins.
