Hazel B. Farmer, 85, of Le Mars, died peacefully at her home Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005.

Hazel Blanche Lang was born Oct. 17, 1920, on the family farm south of Le Mars, in Stanton Township to Albert F. and Myrtle (Nicholson) Lang. Hazel attended school in Merrill. Hazel was united in marriage to Kenneth Farmer on June 8, 1937, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Stanton Township. The couple farmed in Stanton Township and later on the Westmar dairy farm south of Le Mars.

Hazel had worked at the DX Café for a time before working for Hammer's Restaurant for 3 1/2 years then the Club Café for 7 1/2 years before she began her 21 year with K-Products. She had worked in plants in Le Mars and Sioux Center. She retired from K-Products in 1986.

Hazel loved her family, enjoying her children and grandchildren. Hazel was an outdoor person who liked horseback riding and riding motorcycles in her younger years. In her later years, she could be seen riding around Le Mars on her bicycle. When Hazel was almost 60, she decided to go and finish her high school education and attended classes to receive her G.E.D. certificate in 1980. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Merrill.

Hazel had always been a caring person. She provided care and assistance to numerous families in the area when a loved one became ill or needed a little extra help. She was always willing to help around the house, run errands, or take people to appointments.

Survivors include her five children, Larry and his wife, Carol Farmer of Westfield, Kathleen Kruse and her husband, Wendell "Tiny" of Le Mars, Richard Farmer and his wife, Lyla of Craig, Peggy Olson of Le Mars, and Michael Farmer of Le Mars; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Albert F. and Myrtle (Nicholson) Lang; a brother and sister-in-law, Ainsworth and Clara Lang; a son-in-law, Alwayne Oetken; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Joseph Oetken; and a granddaughter-in-law, Theresia Oetken.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at the Merrill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Benjamin Meeks and the Rev. Dan Gerrietts of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville officiating. Interment was in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, rural Le Mars. Visitation was after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation continued Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Pallbearers were her grandsons Jeff Brown, Scott Farmer, Jared Farmer, Joshua Farmer, Brett Oetken, Craig Oetken, and Todd Oetken.

A memorial has been established for Hospice of Siouxland.
