LE MARS, Iowa – Lloyd Bernhard Arne, 86, of LeMars died Friday, February 1, 2002, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in LeMars, with the Reverend Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Carlsen Funeral Home in LeMars is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Arne was born August 8, 1915, in a sod house at South Heart, North Dakota, the son of John and Mary (Thompson) Arne. After the accidental death of his father, the family moved to Beresford, South Dakota. He made his home with his uncle and aunt, John and Martha Thompson, for several years. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
In 1942, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed in the eye tally and Italian Theater with a 456th Bomber Group as a gunner and later as an instructor. In September 1945 he was honorably discharged from the Air Force.
He married Evelyn Numsen in 1946. He worked for Shuck Brothers Garage in Alcester, South Dakota, until moving to Cherokee, Iowa, in 1954 to work for Northwest Iowa Breeders Co-Op as a technician. In 1957, the family moved to LeMars. He had worked for the co-op for 26 years, and retired from what became known as 21st-Century Genetics in 1980. He continued to sork for 21st-Century Genetics part time for the next 13 years.
He was a 44 year member of Grace Lutheran Church in LeMars, having served on several boards including six years as an elder.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, the Rev. Curtis and Jan Arne of DesMoines, Iowa; two daughters, Sallie Rozell of Sioux City, and Candice and her husband, the Rev. Mark Vander Tuig of Altoona, Iowa; a sister, Thelma Wickstrom of Sioux Falls, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Shannon Arne, Courtney Arne, Maren Smay, Kyan Arne, Kellie Trout, Jason Rozell, Kim Rozell, Laura Vander Tuig and Emily Vander Tuig; two great-grandchildren, Kailey Rozell and Justin Kuglin; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Henry, Arlie, and Juel Arne; and a sister, Annetta Shuck.
Pallbearers will be Shannon Arne, Jason Rozell, Myron Rozell, Lynn Numsen, D.J. Trout and Ron Munstertieger.
