Alice Kalas

Alice Kalas, 99, LeMars, died Saturday, November 26, 1994, at Plymouth Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Reverends Gordon Rhodes and George Jennings officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens.

Visitations will be after 2 p.m. Monday with the family present to greet friends from seven to 8 p.m. at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home.

Alice Berger was born March 31, 1895, to Chris and Christina Berger in Pottawattamie County, rural Council Bluffs, Iowa. Alice attended country school in rural Shelby County. She also attended the Sac City Institute and later Des Moines College.

She taught rural school for 10 years in Shelby County. Alice married Harvey Jenson on March 19, 1920, in Viborg, South Dakota. Harvey passed away in December 1923 in Shelby County. In 1951, Alice moved to Harlan where she worked for 17 years at the Memorial Baptist Nursing Home.

Alice was united in marriage to Otto Kalas on October 8, 1969, in Harlan, Iowa. Alice had also operated the Fiscus Grocery Store for seven years. For the last nine years, Alice has made her home at Plymouth Manor Nursing Home.

Alice was a member of First Baptist Church and had been active in the Women's Fellowship. Alice enjoyed needlework, crocheting and oil painting.

She is survived by two sons (step), Richard and his wife, Gerri Kalas of Merrill and Merlin Kalas of Merrill; three grandchildren, Teri and Jim Dryden of South Sioux City, Twyla and John Malloy, of Hinton, and Sheila and Bruce Smit of LeMars; five great-grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews
