Loren W. Hanno, 89, of Le Mars, died early Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Loren William Hanno was born Nov. 22, 1917, on the family farm near Remsen, to Fred R. and Laura (Nitzschke) Hanno. Loren was raised on the farm and attended country school. Following school Loren worked on the family farm with his father. He served his country during World War II in the United States Army from September 1941 until December 1945. Loren was united in marriage to Shirley Kehrberg on April 6, 1943, in Remsen.

Upon Loren's discharge from the service, he returned to Le Mars and purchased a farm east of Merrill, in Stanton Township. In December 1950 the family moved to a farm west of Le Mars. Loren and Shirley continued to live on the farm and raise hogs until 1976 when they moved to Le Mars. Even though Loren and Shirley lived in town his heart remained on the farm and he always remained active in the family operation.

Loren was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council for several years. Loren had also been an active volunteer with 4-H and assisted for many years in the swine buildings at the Plymouth County Fair. He had also been a longtime member of the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars.

Survivors include his wife of over 63 years, Shirley Hanno; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Cindy Hanno and Dean and Paula Hanno, all of Le Mars; six grandchildren: Shannon Hanno-Renken and her husband Steve Renken and their son Lincoln of Le Mars, Noelle Kneip and her husband Troy of Le Mars, Alison Lang and her husband Troy of Minneapolis, Minn., Brittany Hanno of Minneapolis, Minn., Kelli Hanno of Le Mars, and Megan Hanno of Le Mars; two sisters, Verna Athens of Le Mars and Lola Kirchoff and her husband Charles of Fergus Falls, Minn.; a brother-in-law, John Kehrberg and his wife Joyce of Hinton; a sister-in-law, Helen Kehrberg of Le Mars; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Loren was preceded in death his parents, Fred R. and Laura (Nitzschke) Hanno; two brothers, Ervin and Elmer "Bud" Hanno; and a sister, Edna Haack.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Private family interment will be prior to the funeral in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home.
