CLEGHORN, Iowa -- Leola Hawkins, 79, of Cleghorn passed away Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa.
Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Burial will be in Seney Cemetery, Seney, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with the family present 4 to 6 p.m., at the funeral home. There will also be one hour of visitation Monday at the funeral home prior to the service.
Leola Fredonia Hart was born Nov. 15, 1923, at Santa Ana, Calif., the daughter of William and Grace (Boyce) Hart. She graduated from Santa Ana High School and worked as a dental assistant during World War II.
On April 20, 1946, Leola and Duane Douglas Hawkins were united in marriage at United Brethren Church, Leola's home church in Santa Ana. They lived in California for a few years prior to their move to the Remsen, Iowa, area. They farmed north of Remsen until 1976, when they moved to a farm near Wakonda, S.D. Leola and Duane retired in 1998 and made Cleghorn their home.
Leola had been a member of Seney United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school with Duane. She had also been active in Wakonda Methodist Church and was currently attending Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus, Iowa. Leola enjoyed sewing and embroidery as well as flower gardening and arranging.
She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Pamela Sanow and her husband, Allen of Marcus, Iowa, and Jill Roder and her husband, Wayne of Kingsley, Iowa; a son, Jon of Woodburn, Ore.; four grandchildren, Heidi Sanow, Nanette Sanow, Katie Roder and Andy Roder; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Dillon and Caden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane on Jan. 6, 2001; a son, Timothy Duane in 1950; and a sister, Wilma Greer.
