George Washington Zimmerman was born July 6, 1859, at Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of Rev. John Jacob and Theresa Merriman Zimmerman. He came with his parents to Sioux City, Iowa in 1867, at the age of eight years.

George grew to manhood on the farm home, assisting his mother and brothers in improving and developing the place. He received his education in the local schools and remained at home until his marriage Feb. 13, 1883 to Louise Charlotte Berner. He lived in Le Mars, Iowa for seven years. He then purchased a farm in Plymouth township. He was a successful farmer and added to his original land holdings, raising cattle and stock. He was active in community and church affairs and in the councils of the democratic party.

To the union of George Washington Zimmerman and Louise Charlotte seven children were born: Walter Gottlieb Zimmerman; Benjamin Franklin Zimmerman; Arthur Jacob Henry Zimmerman; Helen Mary (Zimmerman) Brandstetter; Roy Zimmerman; Tilda (Zimmerman) Lippke; and baby Louise Zimmerman, who died in infancy.
